1881. Deafness (D-81-002)

Following the appearance in early 1878 of articles about the phonograph, which drew attention to his own deafness, Edison began receiving inquiries about his proposed invention of a hearing aid. (See Thomas A. Edison Papers Microfilm Edition, Part I, 1523-166.) This folder contains correspondence inquiring about the current state of the invention.

Approximately 20 percent of the documents have been filmed. These items received significant replies or were written by individuals associated with Edison.

[ENCLOSURE]

The Eanrnony enables the deaf to hear ina clear, dlatinct, natural tone, free from those sonorous sounds emitted from other instrainents, Ordinary conversation heard without the speaker being close, It works sue- cessfully in. most cases at forty fect distant, and in others more, fts power is remarkable and gives entire fatisfuction.

The Earrnoxn brings into requisition the Trifactal nerve, which passes over the temple and cheek to the the upper tecth bya telephonic communication with the inner ear, ‘The principles involved in the Earvuone ara the refinement and Compression of sound, ant means have been discovered by which the sound can be refined from 100 to 20,000 tines, thereby grading them to the different degrees of Deafness,

What spectacles are to those having bud sight the Eanpnons ts to the Dent,

The inventor has been deat from childhood, and twas in secking reltof that he mado this important discovery, No injury can possibly come from the use of the Ban. THONE, but a perceptible benefit in the natural heaving \s often expertenced hy its use, It takes off the continu strain on the organs of the car, thereby benefitting them, It also has n tendency to stop all noises in the head. Out of hundreds that have used this instrument but ten per cent. could not find relief, and in those cases the auditory nerve and facial herves were pural- yaed. The Eanruony is made of metal and is inde- structable, and finished in bronze and nickel, They are light and attractive, and can be carried in the pocket, 50 as to be always ready for use,

1881. Drexel, Morgan & Company (D-81-003) [not filmed]

This folder contains correspondence about routine financial transactions undertaken by Drexel, Morgan & Company for Edison or his companies. Material relating to Drexel, Morgan & Company's role as a financier of Edison's electric light and telephone ventures can be found in folders on those subjects.

1881. Edison, T.A. ~ General (D-31-004)

This folder contains documents, primarily correspondence, covering a wide variety of subjects. Some of the material relates to personal matters. Also included are documents that deal with more than one subject, such as a letter about both the electric light and the telephone. Documents concerning subjects that do not fall under the main subject categories are also filed in this folder.

Approximately 90 percent of the documents have been filmed. Duplicate copies of correspondence, third-party correspondence unrelated to Edison, and unanswered fan mail have not been filmed. Unsolicited requests for personal favors, for loans and exhibits of inventions, and for information about Edison have not been filmed except in cases where a significant answer has been found. In addition, there is a nine-page letter from Samuel Insull to George E. Gouraud, dated April 29. Most of this letter is illegible, and it has not been filmed.

My Dear Colonel: -

T duly received your kind favor of May 21st. Which reminded me that T had abstained from writing to you for almost a month. My apology for this must be the great press of business that we have to deal with, but for the future T hopé to be able to send you a letter weekly as I promised.

English Telephone.

I have read your letter addressed to Mr. Bdison dated

May 2ist. Tn it you seem somewhat to have mixed up my letter of the 29th.of April with his letter sent somewhere about that date. This rather confused him and he required some explanation from me as to what I had been writing to you. I would prefer my letters to you not being quoted in any letters addressed to him. I am very glad that the Construction Company met with so great a success and trust that the dividends it will earn will, to some extent, justify the enormous premium at which the shares now stand. If you can hurry the settlement of the Edison reversion in the London Company any you will confer a favor on Mr.Edisom as he would

no doubt be very glad to receive the funds due from that Men ens

I suppose, however, like all other matters that get

into the English law courts, will require some considerable time as our legal authorities in the old country seem to aim at the- -poarit’ of “how not to do a thing” Your lettor with enclosures relating to the Glasgow Company ns just arrived. You will no doubt’ hear from Mr.Edison on this matter in the course of a mail or SO, - Oriental Company.

tf T have time T shall write you an official letter to right explaining the status of the Le Gendre matter, but T may here state that Mr. Edison considers the Le Gendre contract null and void as he has done nothing whatever to push Telephone matters although he has had a contract for about a yeare. Nr.Edison is by nu’ means afraid of Le Gendre troubling aa ‘any, but you may rely on Edison doing his very best in the matter. ‘You may probably have’ thought that we quite overlooked this Matter as you heard so* ‘Wittle from us for so long 4 time, but dll ‘that time Kr. Edison was doing his very best to straighten the matter out, and T myself Was’ ‘also occupied considerably in attending to this mutter. “You must: ‘not think that simply because you do tot: hear from me that he and inyself have entirely overlooked the mna't tes’

that Money for actual york done should be obtained by the issue

.of debentures, Mr. Edison did not look upon this proposition

with favor at all. He seems very adverse to overloading an

Electric Light Company by issuing stock in this manner. The fight

‘with the Gas companies will be quite hard enough even if we ob-

tained money on the stock itself, but how it would be if the thing wis “loaded down by issuing stock working on debentures it is hard’ to ‘say. The plant for England will be of “the very best.’ The Stéatin Nynamoe which is to be sent will be capable of minnie no ' less than twelve hundred lights, and the outfit will in every part’ be of the most finished character, The workmen at Edison's machine works are working night and day to get this out, so that not a moment is being lost. Mr. Edison is highly impressed wi th the ‘great importance of mgetine his opponents ‘in ‘Englandby an ex-

hibition of his light at the earliest pussible momént. It is

‘pradgtically decided as to Johnson’s going to Fn¢land. He will”

‘in all probability give his undivided attention to tho preparation of ‘the plant from next week forward, and you well know that when | johngon takes up a thing not a stone will be left unturned in or- dét to get it out by the required time. The exhibit in London will’ no doubt be a eredit to the name of Edison. ° ares The Electric Congress, Paris,’ 7 7 “2.” As T wrote you some time back Mr, Edison is ‘thoroughly a

T have seen @ #ood many of the exhibits which are . already finished They are got up in extremely nice style, and T. think that the English and other inventors will have a hard job to show anything to equal it. I know that you have for a ‘very lony time past wished to see som-thing of this character on’ the othor side of the Atlantic so that justice might be done to ‘Mr.Edison and his inventions, and, unless the elcetrical public are very greatly prejudiced against him, they cannot but be con= ‘vineed of are practicability and universality of his” inventions.’ © THe Electric Light outfir for Paris will be equally complete us °” tho one just going to Londun.s In fact it will be an exact gounter part of it so that at one and tho same time London and Paris wit be ‘able to see Hr. fdison’s light in ite pefrectédn.

My Dear Colonel I beg to confirm dispatch to you of letter of June 3rd. which I hope you will receive in due course. Fruit Experiments.

From your letters to Mr.Edison you seem to have assumed that the question of preservation of Fruit was absolutely settled ~ last year and that there would be no further difficulty about the matter. As a matter of fact it requires considerable experi- menting and although Mr. Edison prposes to ship some fruit and othr ‘things to you during this season it has not yet proved a perfect suecess. Of course he intends working on it until it iay but fi thought it as well to make these remarks in case you should be un- der the impression that the question is settled beyond a doubt. One of Mr.Edison’s assistants has been down to Delaware and made atrangements there with a peach farmer by. which he will be able to put the fruit up in carboys, exhaust them and ship them right from the farm itself. As soon as the season commences you will no doubt receive some considerable trial shipments and in the mean time you will get from us various experimental packages.

Fruit Experiments.

In my letter to you of June Lith. I should have stated that the appliances requisite ta start this business will take a considerable portion of the amount Wt oti you cabled over to hr, | Edison on this account, It requires a 4 horse power engine, and Archimedean screw in connection with mercury pumps, a moveable frais building which ean be put up with ease wherever the Peaches are contracted for, an account of all of which I will endeavor to send you next week, Experiments are now being nade ‘to the end of finding out th best way toe seal the carboys in which it is pro- pused to ship the fruit, and no doubt by the time the season comes cena Nr. Hughes, who has this matter in charge, will be quite ready to send you some considerable shipments of fruit ‘and othor things.

Electric Light.

eee I have seen your various cables to Hi. Edison and Drexél, Nd yan & Co.on this matter, As you will have learned from John= son’s cable to you lir. fduson and he are decidedly of the opinion that to show ‘the light off to good advantag 6 ‘you should wait until Johnson can set up the 1200 light machines’ °Johiison hopes to be able to get off by the Arizona which sails on July 19th. Every thing is boing done to get the machinery ready by jthat time, aiid

T have iat noe come from the works and am sure that if you could only see the system upon which things are managed there, the Breat rush with which our superintendent is trying to turn out the ne- cessary plant for England, you would have confidence that it is ute terly impossible for any shop either on this or the other side of ths Atlantic to do the work quicker, I expect that in hhe course of 10 days or a fortnight the engine will have beon attached to th’é “dynamo and the thing thoroughly tested in ‘anticipation of ship wee: Our lamps are showing very wonderful’ results indeed. The plant tor Envland is being pushed ahead as yuickly as pussible. We have the Porter-Allen enging which km is to op- erate tho machinery already in our shop and the dynamo is far on tho way to completion, and as Johnson is giving the whole of his time to seoiny that this equipment is rushed through you may depend that not a moment will be loste (We had the Paris machine running a fow days ago for a short time, and a apiendie sight it wae to see tho thing running. The dynamo is of course , the largest in the world and will put into the shade every thing that opponents can bring both in the way of economy and efficiency. Yours will be if anything, better than the Paris machine, in’ asmuch as Rdigon will profit by his experience in the manufacture of the Paris machine, and if there should happen to be any slight defects in that thoy will be rectified so far as the London outfir is concernede Our Lams are showing a wonderful record. ‘The way in which Mr. "dison steiyed at the eonclusion that the life of the lamp was fron three to four hundred hours is as follows. He would set up a nuyber of sixteen candle lamps at about fifty candle power and run thom at this state of incandescence until they played out. Now, of course, this was no fair test as the lamps are only made to run at sisteen candle and to run then at fifty would entirely alter the conditions, -The first real test as to how long the lamps would last at six~ toen eandles is now being made. Up to the present moment Guage

uvorage about seven hundred and thirty hours each One went

.

out after burning seventy alee Another went out at eae Renred and sixtye Another went out somewhere in the neighborhood of three or ae ‘The fourh one has just aiee:. The remmining six of the original ten lighted have up to the present been burning nine hundred and ninety hourse How long they will last, of cuurse tinia alone can prov.de The longer thoy do last, of course, the better is the average life of the lap; and anyway it would appear that the average life will be Kcuaidorabiy above one thousand “hourse These ten lamps were just taken out from our ordinary stock and therefore the averaye will be an absolutely fair onee We es watching this test with very ureat interest indeed. Vou will appreciate the very great importance of getting the life of our lamps as long Se possible as it must considerably affeet the econ- omy of the systai The lamps in this building still hold out. As T have alroady told you, we lit up ‘on ‘the g4ath.of Harch and not a single laap has yet givon way. Telephones -

They seen a long time: settling up that Wdison Telephone Company of London liquidation. If you could send Mr. Fdison Ces proceeds of the sale of his shares 1% would be of vory great advan- tage to him at this time. What with his lamp factory, machine works, tubo company and laboratory he requires a very great-deal of money, and if ho could collect what is due hiln on English Velephone rightaway it would save him some ‘eonsidorable anxicetye
