Hopefully I am on now. Um, yeah so as Brewster", "start": 366.92, "stop": 373.62, "id": 81}, {"text": " said, when we were talking about who was going to get to introduce Michelle", "start": 373.62, "stop": 377.58, "id": 82}, {"text": " for today's award ceremony.", "start": 377.58, "stop": 379.08, "id": 83}, {"text": " I really wanted to do it, because I could not be more excited to talk about", "start": 379.08, "stop": 383.9, "id": 84}, {"text": " Michelle Wu and the outsized impact that her work has had on the whole library", "start": 383.9, "stop": 388.22, "id": 85}, {"text": " ecosystem, the Internet Archive and on me personally.", "start": 388.22, "stop": 391.22, "id": 86}, {"text": " The first time I met Michelle was actually at this conference. She was up on the", "start": 392.42, "stop": 396.72, "id": 87}, {"text": " stage at the 2015 library leaders forum, where she was talking about the Internet", "start": 396.72, "stop": 401.7, "id": 88}, {"text": " Archives digitize and lend program and the legal theory behind it.", "start": 401.7, "stop": 406.0, "id": 89}, {"text": " The idea that we would lead are all come to call control digital lending. And I", "start": 406.0, "stop": 411.52, "id": 90}, {"text": " was really fascinated by this idea but I also had a lot of questions. And at one", "start": 411.52, "stop": 416.54, "id": 91}, {"text": " of the breaks, I got a chance to talk to Michelle, and she's spent probably 1520", "start": 416.54, "stop": 421.76, "id": 92}, {"text": " minutes just patiently talking to me through it answering all of my questions and", "start": 421.76, "stop": 426.96, "id": 93}, {"text": " over the next five years of working with Michelle I've learned that this is how", "start": 426.96, "stop": 431.24, "id": 94}, {"text": " her advocacy works. It's often just one patient conversation at a time.", "start": 431.24, "stop": 436.94, "id": 95}, {"text": " That day I went home, and I read Michelle's 2011 paper on the collaborative", "start": 438.21999999999997, "stop": 443.82, "id": 96}, {"text": " collection building. And that paper begins by encouraging her fellow law", "start": 443.82, "stop": 449.86, "id": 97}, {"text": " librarians to imagine a world where your users are able to access every resource", "start": 449.86, "stop": 456.14, "id": 98}, {"text": " they need, regardless of time, space, or resources. And in that paper Michelle", "start": 456.14, "stop": 462.78, "id": 99}, {"text": " laid out what was really a call to action for law libraries to pull their", "start": 462.78, "stop": 467.78, "id": 100}, {"text": " resources together to create a centralized digital library that any of their", "start": 467.78, "stop": 472.8, "id": 101}, {"text": " users can access anywhere, anytime.", "start": 472.8, "stop": 475.84, "id": 102}, {"text": " Chris if you could turn it to the next slide please.", "start": 477.14, "stop": 479.54, "id": 103}, {"text": " So Michelle had identified a serious problem through her own personal experience", "start": 480.78000000000003, "stop": 485.58, "id": 104}, {"text": " and I want you to keep this image in your mind as she tells you more about it.", "start": 485.58, "stop": 490.9, "id": 105}, {"text": " See she discovered firsthand that libraries are vulnerable to the ravages of", "start": 491.32, "stop": 497.34, "id": 106}, {"text": " natural disasters like floods or like the wildfires that we're experiencing here", "start": 497.34, "stop": 502.1, "id": 107}, {"text": " in California. And this issue is only going to get worse with climate change.", "start": 502.1, "stop": 507.88, "id": 108}, {"text": " Michelle also knew that the communities most likely to be impacted by these", "start": 509.12, "stop": 513.2, "id": 109}, {"text": " extreme natural disasters were the ones that were already suffering from a lack", "start": 513.2, "stop": 518.58, "id": 110}, {"text": " of adequate funding for schools, public services, and libraries.", "start": 518.58, "stop": 523.48, "id": 111}, {"text": " These were also the communities that would be the least able to", "start": 524.22, "stop": 527.72, "id": 112}, {"text": " rebuild after a disaster.", "start": 527.72, "stop": 529.3, "id": 113}, {"text": " So, as this interdisciplinary person with her as a librarian, a lawyer and a", "start": 530.72, "stop": 536.56, "id": 114}, {"text": " technologist, she was able to see a common sense pathway to using technology and", "start": 536.56, "stop": 543.12, "id": 115}, {"text": " the law to take a big step towards solving these complex", "start": 543.12, "stop": 547.22, "id": 116}, {"text": " and intertwined problems.", "start": 547.22, "stop": 549.0, "id": 117}, {"text": " Her solution of control digital lending would maximize public investment in these", "start": 549.0, "stop": 555.6, "id": 118}, {"text": " informational resources, not just for the benefit of the wealthiest, but also for", "start": 555.6, "stop": 561.66, "id": 119}, {"text": " the areas that could otherwise never have access to these", "start": 561.66, "stop": 565.4, "id": 120}, {"text": " rich informational resources.", "start": 565.4, "stop": 567.08, "id": 121}, {"text": " Books purchased by wealthy institutions and neighborhoods could be made available", "start": 567.08, "stop": 571.8, "id": 122}, {"text": " for lower resourced communities. And Michelle turned me into", "start": 571.8, "stop": 576.36, "id": 123}, {"text": " a true believer that day.", "start": 576.36, "stop": 577.98, "id": 124}, {"text": " Chris, next slide please.", "start": 579.24, "stop": 580.2, "id": 125}, {"text": " And since then, I have seen her do this again and again and again. She believes", "start": 581.28, "stop": 586.94, "id": 126}, {"text": " in this ideal passionately, and she goes about her work", "start": 586.94, "stop": 590.56, "id": 127}, {"text": " patiently and methodically.", "start": 590.56, "stop": 592.38, "id": 128}, {"text": " And what I've learned by watching Michelle is that great teaching and great", "start": 592.38, "stop": 597.32, "id": 129}, {"text": " advocacy share a lot of skills, a lot of skill set.", "start": 597.32, "stop": 600.9, "id": 130}, {"text": " Whether she's talking at a conference of librarians who don't know a lot about", "start": 602.14, "stop": 606.32, "id": 131}, {"text": " copyright law, or to lawyers who know plenty about copyright but not as much", "start": 606.32, "stop": 611.4, "id": 132}, {"text": " about the day to day workings of libraries, or whether she's talking to", "start": 611.4, "stop": 616.34, "id": 133}, {"text": " university council that have to manage the risk of their institutions as their", "start": 616.34, "stop": 621.16, "id": 134}, {"text": " libraries implementing control digital lending, or to policymakers interested in", "start": 621.16, "stop": 626.98, "id": 135}, {"text": " the benefits of control digital lending for their constituents.", "start": 626.98, "stop": 630.84, "id": 136}, {"text": " In each of these situations, Michelle meets her audience where they are.", "start": 631.42, "stop": 635.8, "id": 137}, {"text": " She's never condescending.", "start": 636.34, "stop": 637.88, "id": 138}, {"text": " Michelle takes the time to answer all the questions from complex legal issues to", "start": 637.88, "stop": 643.96, "id": 139}, {"text": " the practical technicalities. Michelle has an answer for", "start": 643.96, "stop": 647.26, "id": 140}, {"text": " everyone, and for everything.", "start": 647.26, "stop": 648.76, "id": 141}, {"text": " She's also continued to put out scholarship further building on and expanding on", "start": 650.22, "stop": 655.16, "id": 142}, {"text": " her original 2011 proposal.", "start": 655.16, "stop": 657.48, "id": 143}, {"text": " That work has not only supported the Internet Archives ability to make CDL a", "start": 657.48, "stop": 662.88, "id": 144}, {"text": " reality for millions of readers, but it's also now taught around the country to", "start": 662.88, "stop": 667.78, "id": 145}, {"text": " the next generation of lawyers and librarians who are going to need to think", "start": 667.78, "stop": 671.8, "id": 146}, {"text": " creatively about next generation problems.", "start": 671.8, "stop": 674.58, "id": 147}, {"text": " Next slide.", "start": 676.44, "stop": 676.9, "id": 148}, {"text": " Michelle always envisioned that the world she imagined, the world where library", "start": 678.36, "stop": 683.22, "id": 149}, {"text": " users are able to access every resource they need, regardless of time, space and", "start": 683.22, "stop": 688.86, "id": 150}, {"text": " resources would be a team effort.", "start": 688.86, "stop": 690.88, "id": 151}, {"text": " And through Michelle's advocacy and scholarship that world is coming true. We at", "start": 692.0, "stop": 696.6, "id": 152}, {"text": " the Internet Archive are creating it with our many library partners.", "start": 696.6, "stop": 699.78, "id": 153}, {"text": " And at last week's community session we heard from other library efforts, the", "start": 699.78, "stop": 704.62, "id": 154}, {"text": " community of practice like Project Reshare and others.", "start": 704.62, "stop": 707.1, "id": 155}, {"text": " And as we build this world together, I want us to remember the kernel of", "start": 708.44, "stop": 712.86, "id": 156}, {"text": " Michelle's idea that most inspired me to action. And that's the idea that", "start": 712.86, "stop": 717.9, "id": 157}, {"text": " libraries coming together to share their resources could be a great equalizer.", "start": 717.9, "stop": 723.74, "id": 158}, {"text": " That together, we can close the informational divide, closed by the growing", "start": 723.74, "stop": 728.96, "id": 159}, {"text": " economic inequality in this country.", "start": 728.96, "stop": 731.06, "id": 160}, {"text": " That elite institutions can share their wealth of information with poorer and", "start": 731.66, "stop": 736.12, "id": 161}, {"text": " more vulnerable communities. Controlled digital lending holds the potential to", "start": 736.12, "stop": 740.4, "id": 162}, {"text": " make us all better together.", "start": 740.4, "stop": 742.38, "id": 163}, {"text": " And this is the idea that pushes forward the mission of the Internet Archive of", "start": 742.38, "stop": 747.46, "id": 164}, {"text": " universal access to all knowledge and why Michelle Wu is receiving", "start": 747.46, "stop": 751.88, "id": 165}, {"text": " our hero award today.", "start": 751.88, "stop": 753.54, "id": 166}, {"text": " I could not be more excited and proud to be part of the team that is working to", "start": 754.04, "stop": 759.3, "id": 167}, {"text": " make Michelle's vision a reality. {"text": " Last but certainly not least is the Internet Archive itself.", "start": 841.92, "stop": 844.76, "id": 188}, {"text": " Theory tends to fall short of full impact without users", "start": 845.78, "stop": 852.26, "id": 189}, {"text": " understanding how it actually works.", "start": 852.26, "stop": 853.82, "id": 190}, {"text": " And until Internet Archive built their lending platform, there was no practical", "start": 854.66, "stop": 858.18, "id": 191}, {"text": " way to show people how CDO would work in action.", "start": 858.18, "stop": 861.1, "id": 192}, {"text": " Their investment in building tools for libraries and the public gave concrete", "start": 861.68, "stop": 865.4, "id": 193}, {"text": " examples of how CDO might work, and through that allowed us to answer very", "start": 865.4, "stop": 870.26, "id": 194}, {"text": " practical questions for people who are interested.", "start": 870.26, "stop": 872.14, "id": 195}, {"text": " So many thanks to all of these individuals and Internet Archive, both for their", "start": 872.84, "stop": 876.96, "id": 196}, {"text": " partnership with me and for what they've done to advance CDO.", "start": 876.96, "start": 886.04, "stop": 887.58, "id": 199}, {"text": " Some of you may already know the origins of that theory, and it grew out of the", "start": 887.94, "stop": 892.4, "id": 200}, {"text": " aftermath of a natural disaster.", "start": 892.4, "stop": 893.92, "id": 201}, {"text": " You saw the picture of Tropical Storm Allison or the Tropical Storm Allison in", "start": 894.22, "stop": 898.3, "id": 202}, {"text": " the University of Houston's Law Library.", "start": 898.3, "stop": 899.86, "id": 203}, {"text": " And I was hired by UH in 2001 as an associate director to help", "start": 899.86, "stop": 905.84, "id": 204}, {"text": " in the cleanup after that storm.", "start": 905.84, "stop": 907.4, "id": 205}, {"text": " The library you see had a floor that was underground, and", "start": 908.12, "stop": 912.22, "id": 206}, {"text": " that's where most of its collections were.", "start": 912.22, "stop": 913.72, "id": 207}, {"text": " So the entire collection was destroyed, mostly by water itself, but even on the", "start": 914.06, "stop": 917.98, "id": 208}, {"text": " higher floors, what water didn't get molded.", "start": 917.98, "stop": 920.36, "id": 209}, I was also struck by and concerned with three things.", "start": 934.14, "stop": 938.0, "id": 213}, {"text": " First, that it was going to take years to rebuild the collection, which meant", "start": 938.54, "stop": 942.82, "id": 214}, {"text": " that full access to the materials would be lacking during that time period.", "start": 942.82, "stop": 948.84, "id": 215}, {"text": " Second, like many libraries, some of the content that we had was unique.", "start": 949.24, "stop": 952.2, "id": 216}, {"text": " It either wasn't in print and wasn't available secondhand or simply", "start": 952.2, "stop": 956.3, "id": 217}, {"text": " was one of a kind.", "start": 956.3, "stop": 957.96, "id": 218}, {"text": " That could never be replaced, no matter the funding available.", "start": 958.44, "stop": 961.32, "id": 219}, {"text": " Third, that by replacing a collection in a standard manner without additional", "start": 962.32, "stop": 966.78, "id": 220}, {"text": " safeguards, we were rebuilding it to be just as vulnerable to being destroyed in", "start": 966.78, "stop": 971.56, "id": 221}, {"text": " another natural disaster down the line.", "start": 971.56, "stop": 973.44, "id": 222}, {"text": " And for those of you who are not familiar with Houston, flooding", "start": 973.86, "stop": 977.06, "id": 223}, {"text": " is not an uncommon occurrence.", "start": 977.06, "stop": 978.66, "id": 224}, {"text": " So it was in this environment that I came up with a model for collaborative", "start": 979.36, "stop": 983.12, "id": 225}, {"text": " digitization and format shifting and the legal theory behind what", "start": 983.12, "stop": 986.64, "id": 226}, {"text": " today is called controlled digital lending.", "start": 986.64, "stop": 988.46, "id": 227}, {"text": " The vision was of a collaborative nationwide digital library that could ensure", "start": 988.98, "stop": 993.44, "id": 228}, {"text": " access to and preservation of libraries' collective knowledge in the face of both", "start": 993.44, "stop": 998.68, "id": 229}, {"text": " natural and manmade catastrophes, while also reducing the need to spend public", "start": 998.68, "stop": 1003.52, "id": 230}, {"text": " monies on replacing collections that could have", "start": 1003.52, "stop": 1005.76, "id": 231}, {"text": " been better protected at the front end.", "start": 1005.76, "stop": 1007.34, "id": 232}, {"text": " As odd as it may seem today, the legal aspect of my model was not controversial", "start": 1009.3000000000001, "stop": 1015.16, "id": 233}, {"text": " at the beginning. Once I explained how it operated, people seemed to understand", "start": 1015.16, "stop": 1019.14, "id": 234}, {"text": " that it was designed to continue balance, to ensure that", "start": 1019.14, "stop": 1022.18, "id": 235}, {"text": " both purposes of copyright were met.", "start": 1022.18, "stop": 1023.84, "id": 236}, {"text": " Libraries would still purchase materials, authors would still get paid for the", "start": 1024.38, "stop": 1027.26, "id": 237}, {"text": " copies acquired, and libraries could use the number of copies they acquired", "start": 1027.26, "stop": 1030.62, "id": 238}, {"text": " simply freed from any given format.", "start": 1030.62, "stop": 1032.84, "id": 239}, {"text": " That history and the fact that I didn't get a lot of pushback at the very start", "start": 1034.8200000000002, "stop": 1039.5, "id": 240}, {"text": " is part of the reason why I think getting this award surprised me a little bit.", "start": 1039.5, "stop": 1043.04, "id": 241}, {"text": " It never occurred to me then that nearly 20 years later, libraries and society", "start": 1043.5, "stop": 1048.06, "id": 242}, {"text": " would have grown so accustomed to losing the public benefits intended by", "start": 1048.06, "stop": 1052.3, "id": 243}, {"text": " copyright that a legal theory designed to respect the balance of", "start": 1052.3, "stop": 1055.4, "id": 244}, {"text": " copyright would be seen as revolutionary.", "start": 1055.4, "stop": 1057.24, "id": 245}, {"text": " It's not. For me, it was simply a logical extension of copyright law in a digital", "start": 1058.14, "stop": 1062.96, "id": 246}, {"text": " age, keeping the balance of copyright warts at all.", "start": 1062.96, "stop": 1066.12, "id": 247}, {"text": " So that's the history of how the legal theory for CDL came to be. And now I want", "start": 1067.68, "stop": 1071.88, "id": 248}, {"text": " to put out a few comments on where I see us now, at this point in history,", "start": 1071.88, "stop": 1077.84, "id": 249}, {"text": " and where CDL stands there too.", "start": 1078.16, "stop": 1079.7, "id": 250}, {"text": " So my first comment is on the litigation that Chris mentioned that publishers", "start": 1079.7, "stop": 1084.62, "id": 251}, {"text": " have brought against the Internet Archive, but which they are also using to", "start": 1084.62, "stop": 1088.24, "id": 252}, {"text": " attack, not a specific technology, not a specific implementation, but CDL itself.", "start": 1088.24, "stop": 1093.28, "id": 253}, {"text": " While there isn't time to talk about the merits of the case, I do think it's", "start": 1094.58, "stop": 1098.36, "id": 254}, {"text": " worth noting why I believe that CDL will prevail and must prevail at the end if", "start": 1098.36, "stop": 1103.06, "id": 255}, {"text": " libraries make themselves and their users heard. Here's why.", "start": 1103.06, "stop": 1106.26, "id": 256}, {"text": " We've seen this battle before. We've heard these arguments before, not exactly in", "start": 1106.92, "stop": 1112.06, "id": 257}, {"text": " the case of library lending, but we have heard the arguments", "start": 1112.06, "stop": 1115.06, "id": 258}, {"text": " every time there is a new technology.", "start": 1115.06, "stop": 1117.0, "id": 259}, {"text": " We saw it with photocopiers, with Betamax and home recording devices, with", "start": 1117.52, "stop": 1121.86, "id": 260}, {"text": " computers, with caching, with databases. The specter of harm to copyright owners", "start": 1121.86, "stop": 1126.58, "id": 261}, {"text": " is always used as an argument to try to defeat new technological uses, but it's", "start": 1126.58, "stop": 1131.08, "id": 262}, {"text": " rarely supported by data.", "start": 1131.08, "stop": 1132.68, "id": 263}, {"text": " The good news is that in these instances, courts have been able to distinguish", "start": 1132.68, "stop": 1137.28, "id": 264}, {"text": " between fear-based arguments from fact-based ones. They have also repeatedly", "start": 1137.28, "stop": 1141.64, "id": 265}, {"text": " respected and safeguarded the public interest.", "start": 1141.64, "stop": 1143.88, "id": 266}, {"text": " But here's the catch. Courts will only and can only consider the public interest", "start": 1144.24, "stop": 1149.2, "id": 267}, {"text": " in so far as they are aware of it. We cannot assume what they know when it comes", "start": 1149.2, "stop": 1153.96, "id": 268}, {"text": " to library collections or how people rely on them.", "start": 1153.96, "stop": 1156.36, "id": 269}, {"text": " They simply don't interact with the users the way that libraries do, so may not", "start": 1156.36, "stop": 1161.04, "id": 270}, {"text": " realize how access might be hindered by distance, disability or disaster.", "start": 1161.04, "stop": 1165.24, "id": 271}, {"text": " They may not see how loss of access to information can cripple education,", "start": 1166.18, "stop": 1169.58, "id": 272}, {"text": " research or even daily living. And they may not see how CDL can provide short", "start": 1169.78, "stop": 1175.74, "id": 273}, {"text": "-term and long-term solutions or at least part-term", "start": 1175.74, "stop": 1178.28, "id": 274}, {"text": " solutions to some of these challenges.", "start": 1178.28, "stop": 1180.04, "id": 275}, {"text": " No one understands these issues better than libraries, so we must make sure that", "start": 1180.78, "stop": 1185.46, "id": 276}, {"text": " the public interest is served are fully described, visible and clear to lawmakers", "start": 1185.46, "stop": 1191.0, "id": 277}, {"text": " and courts at the time that they make their decisions.", "start": 1191.0, "stop": 1193.02, "id": 278}, {"text": " If we do that, I believe that the public interest will again prevail", "start": 1193.48, "stop": 1196.88, "id": 279}, {"text": " and CDL will survive.", "start": 1196.88, "stop": 1198.5, "id": 280}, {"text": " My second comment about where we stand today is about the impact of", "start": 1199.5, "stop": 1204.44, "id": 281}, {"text": " the pandemic on CDL.", "start": 1204.44, "stop": 1205.98, "id": 282}, {"text": " As all of you know, the pandemic has been devastating, exacerbating the divide", "start": 1207.0800000000002, "stop": 1212.18, "id": 283}, {"text": " between the wealthy and the poor in every imaginable way. Access to information", "start": 1212.18, "stop": 1216.74, "id": 284}, {"text": " was one of those heavy, inequitably applied losses.", "start": 1216.74, "stop": 1220.14, "id": 285}, {"text": " But out of the damage, there is a bright spot.", "start": 1221.0, "stop": 1223.42, "id": 286}, {"text": " And that's a changing attitudes towards CDL and even copyright more generally. In", "start": 1224.1200000000001, "stop": 1229.56, "id": 287}, {"text": " the last decade, at least in my discussions with library, library organizations", "start": 1229.56, "stop": 1234.06, "id": 288}, {"text": " and council, a major impediment to wide adoption of CDL", "start": 1234.06, "stop": 1238.6, "id": 289}, {"text": " has been the legal aspects.", "start": 1238.6, "stop": 1240.4, "id": 290}, {"text": " Many organizations who were convinced of the legality of CDL still had legal", "start": 1240.4, "stop": 1244.8, "id": 291}, {"text": " counsel or boards reluctant to adopt it because of the risk of litigation.", "start": 1244.8, "stop": 1248.36, "id": 292}, {"text": " Not risk that the legal premise was faulty, but simply the risk of being sued and", "start": 1249.32, "stop": 1254.2, "id": 293}, {"text": " the potential cost and investment of time necessary to defend themselves for an", "start": 1254.2, "stop": 1258.46, "id": 294}, {"text": " untested theory. And when I say untested, I mean simply untested in the", "start": 1258.46, "stop": 1262.18, "id": 295}, {"text": " courts, not untested in practice.", "start": 1262.18, "stop": 1264.06, "id": 296}, {"text": " Understandable, the position was understandable, but it was enormously", "start": 1265.7800000000002, "stop": 1270.18, "id": 297}, {"text": " frustrating as unwilling to innovate out of fear of possible risk means that", "start": 1270.18, "stop": 1275.62, "id": 298}, {"text": " library communities were unwilling to or were willing to wait and let others set", "start": 1275.62, "stop": 1280.42, "id": 299}, {"text": " the rules of the game instead of proactively trying to design", "start": 1280.42, "stop": 1283.34, "id": 300}, {"text": " systems the way they thought they should work.", "start": 1283.34, "stop": 1285.02, "id": 301}, {"text": " But the closing of our libraries due to COVID changed that mindset permanently, I", "start": 1285.02, "stop": 1290.48, "id": 302}, {"text": " think. It showed how the desire to avoid risk resulted in actual and widespread", "start": 1290.48, "stop": 1295.56, "id": 303}, {"text": " harm to populations, depriving them of content at a time when", "start": 1295.56, "stop": 1299.0, "id": 304}, {"text": " access was more important than ever.", "start": 1299.0, "stop": 1300.5, "id": 305}, {"text": " Now, libraries seem more willing to press their attorneys on detailed reasonings", "start": 1301.58, "stop": 1305.96, "id": 306}, {"text": " rather than just accepting potential risk as a justification to avoid innovation.", "start": 1305.96, "stop": 1310.06, "id": 307}, {"text": " And governing bodies seem to have a greater awareness that if they don't help", "start": 1310.68, "stop": 1314.04, "id": 308}, {"text": " their libraries proactively protect the public interest using all tools", "start": 1314.04, "stop": 1318.36, "id": 309}, {"text": " available, including taking the risk of being sued, the balance of copyright will", "start": 1318.36, "stop": 1323.96, "id": 310}, {"text": " be lost just when it's most needed.", "start": 1323.96, "stop": 1325.84, "id": 311}, {"text": " With this new heightened awareness, I think the future of access is brighter. Not", "start": 1327.5, "stop": 1331.56, "id": 312}, {"text": " only do I think CDL will flourish, but there seems to be a very real chance that", "start": 1331.56, "stop": 1335.22, "id": 313}, {"text": " libraries will more aggressively fight to regain some of the public interest", "start": 1335.22, "stop": 1338.42, "id": 314}, {"text": " benefits of copyright that they've lost over the years.", "start": 1338.42, "stop": 1340.8, "id": 315}, {"text": " And that takes us to the future of CDL.", "start": 1341.46, "stop": 1343.3, "id": 316}, {"text": " As Dean Smith said during the opening session, CDL isn't the end. It's just the", "start": 1344.42, "stop": 1349.5, "id": 317}, {"text": " beginning. The future of access, if what we're looking for is full and equal", "start": 1349.5, "stop": 1354.72, "id": 318}, {"text": " access for every person, for every child to have knowledge, to have access to the", "start": 1354.72, "stop": 1359.52, "id": 319}, {"text": " knowledge that they need to succeed, that's an open access. But as long as works", "start": 1359.52, "stop": 1364.56, "id": 320}, {"text": " traditionally published are still assigned for classwork, are still needed for", "start": 1364.56, "stop": 1369.08, "id": 321}, {"text": " research, are still read by our users, it is absolutely essential of the balance", "start": 1369.08, "stop": 1373.52, "id": 322}, {"text": " in copyright survive, and it's absolutely essential to use", "start": 1373.52, "stop": 1376.26, "id": 323}, {"text": " CDL to ensure that balance.", "start": 1376.26, "stop": 1378.02, "id": 324}, {"text": " I believe that reliable access to information is the great equalizer. Information", "start": 1379.56, "stop": 1383.84, "id": 325}, {"text": " shapes each of us, and lack of it is part of what increases our divides.", "start": 1383.84, "stop": 1389.22, "id": 326}, {"text": " If you doubt this, just take a look at nations, current and past, that have used", "start": 1389.22, "stop": 1395.1, "id": 327}, {"text": " censorship to control information, such as China and North Korea now or", "start": 1395.1, "stop": 1398.74, "id": 328}, {"text": " Germany and Japan during World War Two.", "start": 1398.74, "stop": 1400.54, "id": 329}, {"text": " And it's pretty impossible to deny that restricting information had an incredible", "start": 1400.96, "stop": 1404.9, "id": 330}, {"text": " impact on their population's view of themselves as well as the rest of the world.", "start": 1404.9, "stop": 1409.18, "id": 331}, {"text": " Reading is known to build empathy and understanding, introducing people to", "start": 1410.05, "stop": 1413.74, "id": 332}, {"text": " experiences different from their own. But that is only the case where the", "start": 1413.74, "stop": 1417.56, "id": 333}, {"text": " information available is varied. We already know that that is not", "start": 1417.56, "stop": 1421.14, "id": 334}, {"text": " consistently true.", "start": 1421.14, "stop": 1422.78, "id": 335}, {"text": " Libraries that exist in wealthier communities or more diverse communities will", "start": 1423.78, "stop": 1427.32, "id": 336}, {"text": " have fundamentally different collections from those", "start": 1427.32, "stop": 1430.12, "id": 337}, {"text": " in smaller or poorer communities.", "start": 1430.12, "stop": 1431.74, "id": 338}, {"text": " When access to information is determined by wealth, we shouldn't be surprised", "start": 1431.74, "stop": 1436.12, "id": 339}, {"text": " that people develop different worldviews based", "start": 1436.12, "stop": 1438.56, "id": 340}, {"text": " on the materials available to them.", "start": 1438.56, "stop": 1440.1, "id": 341}, {"text": " So what I'm going to say is, imagine instead a world where everyone has access to", "start": 1441.4, "stop": 1445.52, "id": 342}, {"text": " all of its libraries collections, where the information that someone has access", "start": 1445.52, "stop": 1449.16, "id": 343}, {"text": " to doesn't depend on wealth, location, their local communities resources or", "start": 1449.16, "stop": 1453.92, "id": 344}, {"text": " political leanings, where everyone can find a book about someone like themselves,", "start": 1453.92, "stop": 1458.3, "id": 345}, {"text": " as well as a world of books on people unlike them, where they have the resources", "start": 1458.74, "stop": 1463.76, "id": 346}, {"text": " to research a fact for validity or to question an unverified statement.", "start": 1463.76, "stop": 1467.46, "id": 347}, {"text": " Now, even though that is the big vision, I am also aware that that is not", "start": 1468.8, "stop": 1474.42, "id": 348}, {"text": " necessarily reality, largely because copyright law internationally is very", "start": 1474.42, "stop": 1480.52, "id": 349}, {"text": " complex and not, it doesn't lend itself to that type of use.", "start": 1480.52, "stop": 1484.52, "id": 350}, {"text": " However, I believe that that vision can be exercised within the United States", "start": 1484.52, "stop": 1489.14, "id": 351}, {"text": " under current law and with technologies that are available to us now.", "start": 1489.14, "stop": 1493.48, "id": 352}, {"text": " I imagine a nation where every title has been digitized, where there is a single", "start": 1494.92, "stop": 1499.24, "id": 353}, {"text": " library discovery layer integrated with all of our individual systems, one that", "start": 1499.24, "stop": 1503.42, "id": 354}, {"text": " allows users to search and borrow from any library in the United States, and", "start": 1503.42, "stop": 1507.08, "id": 355}, {"text": " where the lending mechanism allows for local library control over borrowing.", "start": 1507.08, "stop": 1510.26, "id": 356}, {"text": " It would be a system where everyone has access to every title, obviously not", "start": 1510.26, "stop": 1515.24, "id": 357}, {"text": " simultaneously as we still need to respect the own to loan ratio.", "start": 1515.24, "stop": 1518.82, "id": 358}, {"text": " And not everyone would have the same borrowing privileges, lending periods, or", "start": 1519.9, "stop": 1523.82, "id": 359}, {"text": " priorities, but they would have access nonetheless.", "start": 1523.82, "stop": 1526.8, "id": 360}, {"text": " It would be a system that allows for recalls by user in the owning community to", "start": 1526.8, "stop": 1531.94, "id": 361}, {"text": " recognize our obligations to the people who funded those collections, but it also", "start": 1531.94, "stop": 1536.66, "id": 362}, {"text": " enables materials to be used outside the community", "start": 1536.66, "stop": 1539.0, "id": 363}, {"text": " when its members aren't using them.", "start": 1539.0, "stop": 1540.54, "id": 364}, {"text": " Inequality has been growing in the United States for decades, long enough to know", "start": 1541.72, "stop": 1545.86, "id": 365}, {"text": " that it won't change unless we find a way to change it. There are ways to share", "start": 1545.86, "stop": 1549.44, "id": 366}, {"text": " wealth while honoring commitments to local populations.", "start": 1549.44, "stop": 1551.94, "id": 367}, {"text": " And CDL is a mechanism that allows such sharing if", "start": 1551.94, "stop": 1555.26, "id": 368}, {"text": " libraries have the will to do it.", "start": 1555.26, "stop": 1556.86, "id": 369}, {"text": " Information is power. It always has been.", "start": 1557.54, "stop": 1560.36, "id": 370}, {"text": " Part of the role of libraries is to ensure that this power is not reserved just", "start": 1561.1, "stop": 1564.8, "id": 371}, {"text": " to the wealthy, privileged, or the already powerful.", "start": 1564.8, "stop": 1567.54, "id": 372}, {"text": " That to me is the future of CDL.", "start": 1568.12, "stop": 1569.92, "id": 373}, {"text": " It's not in CDL itself, but it will be in how libraries choose to use it to", "start": 1570.18, "stop": 1574.36, "id": 374}, {"text": " lessen inequality. CDL is helping", "start": 1700.96, "stop": 1706.7, "id": 402}, {"text": " preserve the legacy and the cultural heritage of those closed collections.", "start": 1706.7, "stop": 1711.62, "id": 403}, {"text": " And today, I want to tell you how CDL, controlled digital lending, is helping", "start": 1712.4, "stop": 1716.5, "id": 404}, {"text": " preserve the legacy of Marygrove College.", "start": 1716.5, "stop": 1719.1, "id": 405}, {"text": " Marygrove College was founded in 1905 by the sister servants of the Immaculate", "start": 1720.64, "stop": 1725.1, "id": 406}, {"text": " Heart of Mary and moved to its Detroit campus, which you're seeing here, in 1927.", "start": 1725.1, "stop": 1730.54, "id": 407}, {"text": " Marygrove was originally a women's college.", "start": 1731.6, "stop": 1733.32, "id": 408}, {"text": " It became co-ed in the 1970s, and in recent years, it was known for its graduate", "start": 1733.82, "stop": 1738.6, "id": 409}, {"text": " programs in human resource management and social justice.", "start": 1738.6, "stop": 1742.06, "id": 410}, {"text": " But in 2017, facing financial hardship, Marygrove eliminated its undergraduate", "start": 1742.9, "stop": 1749.02, "id": 411}, {"text": " programs. And then, in January of last year, the Board of Trustees announced that", "start": 1749.02, "stop": 1755.02, "id": 412}, {"text": " the entire college would close in December.", "start": 1755.02, "stop": 1757.7, "id": 413}, {"text": " And so a central question for Dr. Elizabeth Burns, the president of the college,", "start": 1758.54, "stop": 1763.04, "id": 414}, {"text": " was what would happen to the library and its 70,000 volumes of books?", "start": 1763.04, "stop": 1767.48, "id": 415}, {"text": " What happens to the books in a library when a college closes?", "start": 1784.46, "stop": 1790.16, "id": 416}, {"text": " What happens to the community that calls that institution home?", "start": 1791.58, "stop": 1796.04, "id": 417}, {"text": " When I heard that Marygrove was going to be closing, it broke my heart. It broke", "start": 1799.04, "stop": 1804.04, "id": 418}, {"text": " my heart that there would be other students who wouldn't understand the social", "start": 1804.04, "stop": 1810.16, "id": 419}, {"text": " justice perspective that an education here gave you. It breaks my heart.", "start": 1810.16, "stop": 1816.84, "id": 420}, {"text": " That the sisters had to give this up.", "start": 1819.54, "stop": 1822.04, "id": 421}, {"text": " In 1905, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary founded Marygrove College,", "start": 1822.6599999999999, "stop": 1828.12, "id": 422}, {"text": " training generations of women to be teachers and social workers in the tradition", "start": 1828.54, "stop": 1833.04, "id": 423}, {"text": " of social justice. Its books reflected those values, eventually growing", "start": 1833.04, "stop": 1838.22, "id": 424}, {"text": " to 70,000 volumes.", "start": 1838.22, "stop": 1839.94, "id": 425}, {"text": " Think of all the students that sat at these tables and struggled with these books", "start": 1841.06, "stop": 1846.52, "id": 426}, {"text": " and wrote those papers. What are you going to do with that spirit? Who can", "start": 1846.52, "stop": 1853.5, "id": 427}, {"text": " be trusted with that?", "start": 1853.5, "stop": 1855.08, "id": 428}, {"text": " I'm Brewster Kale, founder and digital librarian of the Internet Archive. The", "start": 1858.54, "stop": 1863.42, "id": 429}, {"text": " idea is to build universal access to all knowledge. Can anybody, curious enough,", "start": 1863.42, "stop": 1868.16, "id": 430}, {"text": " to want to go and find information, be able to find it, read it, explore it, dive", "start": 1868.74, "stop": 1873.82, "id": 431}, {"text": " into it, and then be able to add back their voice into the library?", "start": 1873.82, "stop": 1878.44, "id": 432}, {"text": " You borrow something and you have to return it. But when you return it, you", "start": 1878.44, "stop": 1883.98, "id": 433}, {"text": " should be better off for having had it.", "start": 1883.98, "stop": 1886.46, "id": 434}, {"text": " So we showed up, there were 40 people working to pack up this library into boxes", "start": 1887.18, "stop": 1891.54, "id": 435}, {"text": " and putting them on trucks. And those then are digitized and the digital copies", "start": 1891.54, "stop": 1896.66, "id": 436}, {"text": " are put online, but in digital rights management to make sure that they are lent", "start": 1896.66, "stop": 1901.32, "id": 437}, {"text": " only one reader at a time.", "start": 1901.32, "stop": 1903.12, "id": 438}, {"text": " Today, less than a year after the library closed for good, the Mary Grove College", "start": 1903.92, "stop": 1908.82, "id": 439}, {"text": " Library digital collection is available to people everywhere.", "start": 1908.82, "stop": 1912.78, "id": 440}, {"text": " When they told us that they were going to digitize the library, didn't know", "start": 1913.7, "stop": 1918.2, "id": 441}, {"text": " exactly what that meant. So actually seeing it now, this was a", "start": 1918.2, "stop": 1924.92, "id": 442}, {"text": " stroke of genius. This Internet Library stuff is a pretty good idea.", "start": 1924.92, "stop": 1929.84, "id": 443}, {"text": " A library is much more than the books on the shelves. It is the center of a", "start": 1929.84, "stop": 1934.42, "id": 444}, {"text": " community. It reflects a history of a hundred years of interests and passions and", "start": 1934.42, "stop": 1939.96, "id": 445}, {"text": " collections that have been built by librarians, faculty, students.", "start": 1939.96, "stop": 1943.76, "id": 446}, {"text": " I borrow something from you. It might be a thought. And that thought made me", "start": 1944.78, "stop": 1950.1, "id": 447}, {"text": " better. Now what can I do with that thought that returns it to you in", "start": 1950.1, "stop": 1956.12, "id": 448}, {"text": " a way that makes you better?", "start": 1956.12, "stop": 1957.62, "id": 449}, {"text": " And having that collection all online to be used by people all over the world.", "start": 1957.62, "stop": 1963.66, "id": 450}, {"text": " That is the idea of the blossoming of this next generation of", "start": 1964.02, "stop": 1967.8, "id": 451}, {"text": " Mary Grove College Library.", "start": 1967.8, "stop": 1969.4, "id": 452}, {"text": " A tower of ivory swathed in a love so bold,", "start": 1970.98, "stop": 1977.2, "id": 453}, {"text": " a beloved dream of a sister of soul. People study in the library,", "start": 2077.56, "stop": 2081.7, "id": 466}, {"text": " even if they're bringing their own books.", "start": 2082.56, "stop": 2084.6, "id": 467}, {"text": " In the modern world, modern era, you know, it's IT access. So the library", "start": 2085.5, "stop": 2092.3, "id": 468}, {"text": " was very important to generations of alums. It was the most often asked", "start": 2092.3, "stop": 2097.96, "id": 469}, {"text": " question that I got.", "start": 2097.96, "stop": 2099.52, "id": 470}, {"text": " It was what's going to happen to the library. Some people ask that before they", "start": 2100.29, "stop": 2105.1, "id": 471}, {"text": " even ask about the buildings. I think they assume the buildings would stay, but", "start": 2105.1, "stop": 2109.32, "id": 472}, {"text": " the library was was for a foremost on their mind.", "start": 2109.32, "stop": 2113.92, "id": 473}, {"text": " It was a concern when I could share with them that the library books and", "start": 2113.92, "stop": 2120.66, "id": 474}, {"text": " the materials were going to be donated to the Internet Archives", "start": 2120.66, "stop": 2125.4, "id": 475}, {"text": " digitized and available online.", "start": 2125.4, "stop": 2128.18, "id": 476}, {"text": " They were excited. It was, you know, as an administrator. I was incredibly", "start": 2129.56, "stop": 2135.88, "id": 477}, {"text": " grateful. This was hanging over over my head, you know, the what to do with these", "start": 2135.88, "stop": 2141.92, "id": 478}, {"text": " all these wonderful books that we had.", "start": 2141.92, "stop": 2143.9, "id": 479}, {"text": " And so it was it was really very, very critical decision, a very important", "start": 2144.54, "stop": 2150.98, "id": 480}, {"text": " decision that everyone was involved in. And when we again with the offer of", "start": 2150.98, "stop": 2157.78, "id": 481}, {"text": " the Internet Archives to come and take the collection packet up.", "start": 2157.78, "stop": 2163.86, "id": 482}, {"text": " I took some pictures of the books leaving for California and, you know, all", "start": 2163.86, "stop": 2170.8, "id": 483}, {"text": " the boxes of books and it was it was sad. It was sad to see them go. But the", "start": 2170.8, "stop": 2176.5, "id": 484}, {"text": " knowledge that they would still be available and still be utilized", "start": 2176.5, "stop": 2182.38, "id": 485}, {"text": " Just kept us going. I mean, that is the thing that keeps us going as we wrap up", "start": 2183.82, "stop": 2190.82, "id": 486}, {"text": " the college. But then I transitioned, given the mission of", "start": 2325.52, "stop": 2330.4, "id": 516}, {"text": " the college, which was social justice to build the first Masters of Arts in", "start": 2330.4, "stop": 2337.4, "id": 517}, {"text": " social justice, which was a huge success.", "start": 2337.4, "stop": 2340.06, "id": 518}, {"text": " We have over 300 graduates and other universities have since followed suit.", "start": 2340.06, "stop": 2346.7, "id": 519}, {"text": " That's great. My connection with Mary Grove", "start": 2397.84, "stop": 2403.68, "id": 529}, {"text": " is one I am a native lifelong Detroiter and so, and I grew up not too far from", "start": 2403.68, "stop": 2410.28, "id": 530}, {"text": " Mary Grove and so it was always a building a facility of campus that I drove", "start": 2410.28, "stop": 2417.04, "id": 531}, {"text": " past quite a few times.", "start": 2417.04, "stop": 2419.56, "id": 532}, {"text": " And so there's that emotional connection there.", "start": 2419.56, "stop": 2422.44, "id": 533}, {"text": " Also, Mary Grove was part of what was a consortium called Dolan that. And as I", "start": 2424.88, "stop": 2430.96, "id": 534}, {"text": " mentioned to, to, to Chris and folks, just prior to the meeting, my connection I", "start": 2430.96, "stop": 2437.6, "id": 535}, {"text": " when I found out they were closing.", "start": 2437.6, "stop": 2439.48, "id": 536}, {"text": " I was interested in getting some of the furniture from because I knew it's an old", "start": 2439.48, "stop": 2445.82, "id": 537}, {"text": " building it's an old, old campus, some antique stuff is I thought it'd be great", "start": 2445.82, "stop": 2450.58, "id": 538}, {"text": " to see if we can, if we could acquire some really nice furniture library", "start": 2450.58, "stop": 2455.1, "id": 539}, {"text": " furniture on the cheap. Can", "start": 2525.4, "stop": 2530.82, "id": 556}, {"text": " you tell me about the library and about its", "start": 2530.82, "stop": 2533.08, "id": 557}, {"text": " collection, what did it mean to campus.", "start": 2533.08, "stop": 2535.08, "id": 558}, {"text": " Well, some of my thoughts about the library have already been talked about it, it", "start": 2536.4, "stop": 2542.24, "id": 559}, {"text": " was, it is its physical presence is very.", "start": 2542.24, "stop": 2546.72, "id": 560}, {"text": " It's just beautiful it would paneling and high ceilings, everyone who walked into", "start": 2548.2000000000003, "stop": 2554.52, "id": 561}, {"text": " the library had to sort of stop for a minute and just look around, you know,", "start": 2554.52, "stop": 2558.38, "id": 562}, {"text": " students wouldn't just necessarily march through and try to get their homework", "start": 2558.88, "stop": 2563.56, "id": 563}, {"text": " done, there was community members would want to hold their meetings there because", "start": 2563.56, "stop": 2567.94, "id": 564}, {"text": " it was, it was, it was a quiet place it was", "start": 2567.94, "stop": 2572.92, "id": 565}, {"text": " just very charming with.", "start": 2572.92, "stop": 2576.96, "id": 566}, {"text": " You felt like you're walking back into history as you walked into the library. So", "start": 2578.46, "stop": 2582.84, "id": 567}, {"text": " I kind of wanted to make them as far as the collection is concerned.", "start": 2582.84, "stop": 2586.0, "id": 568}, {"text": " The collection reflected the, like all libraries we tried to the collection", "start": 2589.04, "stop": 2595.2, "id": 569}, {"text": " reflected the programs and the courses that were offered by Mary Grove but", "start": 2595.2, "stop": 2599.38, "id": 570}, {"text": " also the student body as well.", "start": 2599.38, "stop": 2601.08, "id": 571}, {"text": " And I started in 2017 so I can't even actually we only", "start": 2601.08, "stop": 2607.84, "id": 572}, {"text": " ordered maybe 123 print items after I arrived there was just no.", "start": 2607.84, "stop": 2612.68, "id": 573}, {"text": " There's no budget for it, but it was a robust I felt that a lot of", "start": 2613.7000000000003, "stop": 2618.74, "id": 574}, {"text": " attention had been given to the library.", "start": 2618.74, "stop": 2620.64, "id": 575}, {"text": " A lot of funding and interest in the library because when I arrived it", "start": 2620.64, "stop": 2627.56, "id": 576}, {"text": " was the tell the collection itself is robust.", "start": 2627.56, "stop": 2630.98, "id": 577}, {"text": " You know, Mary I worked at Washington University in St. Louis and academic", "start": 2632.56, "stop": 2638.12, "id": 578}, {"text": " library and those academic libraries you know they have it's a nearly religious", "start": 2638.12, "stop": 2643.12, "id": 579}, {"text": " experience on a place it's a liminal.", "start": 2643.12, "stop": 2646.34, "id": 580}, {"text": " You know it's that a reverent reverence when you walk into the library so I that", "start": 2646.34, "stop": 2652.08, "id": 581}, {"text": " resonated with me when you're talking about people coming into the library", "start": 2652.08, "stop": 2655.06, "id": 582}, {"text": " that's, that's one of the things that I think all of us who are drawn to", "start": 2655.06, "stop": 2658.24, "id": 583}, {"text": " librarianship like about libraries for sure.", "start": 2658.24, "stop": 2661.7, "id": 584}, {"text": " I'd like to turn to Dr. Bryant so you know you as you mentioned you started the", "start": 2662.2, "stop": 2666.92, "id": 585}, {"text": " nation's first master's program in social justice at Mary Grove. So how important", "start": 2666.92, "stop": 2672.26, "id": 586}, {"text": " was the library collection to your program.", "start": 2672.26, "stop": 2675.06, "id": 587}, {"text": " Well, first of all, just let me say the library was considered our best kept", "start": 2675.77, "stop": 2680.6, "id": 588}, {"text": " secret between the staff the aura of it, the book collection and", "start": 2680.6, "stop": 2686.82, "id": 589}, {"text": " just, it was like a destination and in many ways.", "start": 2686.82, "stop": 2690.76, "id": 590}, {"text": " Like my friend good friend activist friend Elena Rada, the collection was", "start": 2692.1400000000003, "stop": 2698.2, "id": 591}, {"text": " important because in Detroit reading is an act of resistance.", "start": 2698.2, "stop": 2702.6, "id": 592}, {"text": " And this is kind of the position that we would try to put out", "start": 2703.58, "stop": 2707.46, "id": 593}, {"text": " there for our students.", "start": 2707.46, "stop": 2709.02, "id": 594}, {"text": " The library author just unbelievable access to all kinds", "start": 2709.02, "stop": 2715.14, "id": 595}, {"text": " of social justice information.", "start": 2715.14, "stop": 2716.74, "id": 596}, {"text": " Think of the encyclopedia of social movements where you could just flip through", "start": 2718.06, "stop": 2724.02, "id": 597}, {"text": " it and see women's movements, women, you know, in Africa and Asia I mean, just", "start": 2724.02, "stop": 2730.86, "id": 598}, {"text": " all over a history of social movements in our world.", "start": 2730.86, "stop": 2734.82, "id": 599}, {"text": " It was also an inspiration and I remember I was, I was kind of surprised but", "start": 2734.82, "stop": 2741.14, "id": 600}, {"text": " very very happy.", "start": 2741.14, "stop": 2742.68, "id": 601}, {"text": " Some of you might might have heard of Austin Channing price. So, we understand that the that Mary grow faced", "start": 2793.2000000000003, "stop": 2799.6, "id": 612}, {"text": " some financial challenges and and made the very tough decision to", "start": 2799.6, "stop": 2804.58, "id": 613}, {"text": " close some of its programs.", "start": 2804.58, "stop": 2806.3, "id": 614}, {"text": " So how did the, how did those financial implications.", "start": 2806.88, "stop": 2810.64, "id": 615}, {"text": " How did those impact your library operations for the for the couple of years that", "start": 2811.58, "stop": 2816.0, "id": 616}, {"text": " you were that you were in the role.", "start": 2816.0, "stop": 2817.66, "id": 617}, {"text": " Well, when I first started Mary Grove.", "start": 2818.66, "stop": 2822.46, "id": 618}, {"text": " It was, we had a very tiny book budget.", "start": 2823.52, "stop": 2826.78, "id": 619}, {"text": " So there was a policy or I established a policy with other college leaders to", "start": 2828.5, "stop": 2835.26, "id": 620}, {"text": " move more towards an electronic collection and away from ordering books and that", "start": 2835.26, "stop": 2841.06, "id": 621}, {"text": " was the first that was before there was any.", "start": 2841.06, "stop": 2843.22, "id": 622}, {"text": " Not that was before there's open talk about closing the college.", "start": 2844.2, "stop": 2850.22, "id": 623}, {"text": " We were already even our instruction we're going online we were we joined the", "start": 2851.76, "stop": 2857.74, "id": 624}, {"text": " Michigan virtual reference collaboration we we started an online tutoring", "start": 2857.74, "stop": 2863.66, "id": 625}, {"text": " program, and we started to shift to buying to focusing on a", "start": 2863.66, "stop": 2870.58, "id": 626}, {"text": " video collection and then, but everything but the collection was still pretty", "start": 2870.58, "stop": 2876.86, "id": 627}, {"text": " much multidisciplinary because the call it was the largest the college was", "start": 2876.86, "stop": 2882.44, "id": 628}, {"text": " predominantly an undergraduate program with, and it was a liberal had a liberal", "start": 2882.44, "stop": 2886.88, "id": 629}, {"text": " arts program.", "start": 2886.88, "stop": 2890.18, "id": 630}, {"text": " Then when the undergraduate program closed.", "start": 2890.18, "stop": 2895.12, "id": 631}, {"text": " There was another major shift towards away from the multidisciplinary", "start": 2895.12, "stop": 2902.0, "id": 632}, {"text": " aspect to a more subject specific collection. So I discontinued", "start": 2902.0, "stop": 2908.66, "id": 633}, {"text": " some of the multi multi disciplinary databases and started", "start": 2908.66, "stop": 2913.08, "id": 634}, {"text": " acquiring or", "start": 2913.08, "stop": 2915.84, "id": 635}, {"text": " Building for the human resource management or education program was one of our", "start": 2919.02, "stop": 2924.9, "id": 636}, {"text": " large programs and of course, social justice.", "start": 2924.9, "stop": 2927.9, "id": 637}, {"text": " So we bought some subject specific databases, but we only really", "start": 2927.9, "stop": 2934.46, "id": 638}, {"text": " bought maybe two or three print items and two of those were and", "start": 2934.46, "stop": 2940.2, "id": 639}, {"text": " requested by sister Barbara in the social justice department, and I", "start": 2940.2, "stop": 2946.92, "id": 640}, {"text": " found an invoice here Jackson rising the struggle for economic democracy and", "start": 2946.92, "stop": 2952.3, "id": 641}, {"text": " black self determination was one of our last print books that", "start": 2952.3, "stop": 2957.72, "id": 642}, {"text": " bar sister Barbara ordered.", "start": 2957.72, "stop": 2959.22, "id": 643}, {"text": " We also bought encyclopedia of African American history.", "start": 2960.16, "stop": 2965.12, "id": 644}, {"text": " And those were our print that was part of our print collection.", "start": 2966.26, "stop": 2969.32, "id": 645}, {"text": " And so at some point during the the considerations, then there was the decision", "start": 2971.22, "stop": 2977.06, "id": 646}, {"text": " to close the school and to close the library. And can you can you walk us through", "start": 2977.06, "stop": 2982.38, "id": 647}, {"text": " some of the decision making and some of the conversations that were happening on", "start": 2982.38, "stop": 2985.42, "id": 648}, {"text": " campus about what to do with the library.", "start": 2985.42, "stop": 2987.44, "id": 649}, {"text": " Yeah. So then there was the second phase which was closing", "start": 2987.44, "stop": 2994.0, "id": 650}, {"text": " the graduate programs and just closing Mary grow completely.", "start": 2994.0, "stop": 2998.4, "id": 651}, {"text": " Um, so I'm trying to think how to answer that question.", "start": 3000.9, "stop": 3005.16, "id": 652}, {"text": " We, the first thing we did was tried to do we did a quick literature review", "start": 3006.1, "stop": 3013.04, "id": 653}, {"text": " to see what was out there about how to close a library and there really was very", "start": 3013.04, "stop": 3016.82, "id": 654}, {"text": " little one article that helped us was when the library closes by Marianne", "start": 3016.82, "stop": 3023.44, "id": 655}, {"text": " Griffith, if Griffin, and that was published in 1984 but it was kind of a", "start": 3023.44, "stop": 3028.34, "id": 656}, {"text": " roadmap for us.", "start": 3028.34, "stop": 3031.08, "id": 657}, {"text": " So, So your question was sent.", "start": 3033.18, "stop": 3038.32, "id": 658}, {"text": " So what to do with the collection itself.", "start": 3039.96, "stop": 3042.02, "id": 659}, {"text": " When people heard that the Mary Grove was closing different vendors contacted me", "start": 3042.8, "stop": 3049.52, "id": 660}, {"text": " so I didn't have to reach out very much. If at all, that there were two or three", "start": 3049.52, "stop": 3054.82, "id": 661}, {"text": " booksellers that were interested in buying from books from us but they wanted to", "start": 3054.82, "stop": 3059.66, "id": 662}, {"text": " selectively take this, just the best materials and that wasn't going to.", "start": 3059.66, "stop": 3066.16, "id": 663}, {"text": " That wasn't the solution to our problem. So when I heard about it actually was a,", "start": 3067.06, "stop": 3072.32, "id": 664}, {"text": " it was a Wayne State University librarian that contacted me.", "start": 3072.32, "stop": 3076.7, "id": 665}, {"text": " Mike Can you help me remember her name, it was, she sent me an email Alexandra", "start": 3077.78, "stop": 3082.14, "id": 666}, {"text": " Sarkozy. Yes, yes. And I thanked her, she contacted me and we just kind of a", "start": 3082.14, "stop": 3087.84, "id": 667}, {"text": " whisper little email and she said you know internet archive might", "start": 3087.84, "stop": 3090.78, "id": 668}, {"text": " be interested in.", "start": 3090.78, "stop": 3092.42, "id": 669}, {"text": " In talking to you about your collection and that got the ball rolling.", "start": 3092.42, "stop": 3096.36, "id": 670}, {"text": " I really appreciated her.", "start": 3097.02, "stop": 3098.76, "id": 671}, {"text": " Because she didn't know me she they might get to come, you came and a couple", "start": 3099.54, "stop": 3104.58, "id": 672}, {"text": " other librarians from Wayne. Was that to look at our furniture.", "start": 3104.58, "stop": 3108.8, "id": 673}, {"text": " Yeah, that was that that was the, you know, the what we could, and then yeah and", "start": 3109.64, "stop": 3114.72, "id": 674}, {"text": " it was, you know, we had mentioned to Alexandra prior to", "start": 3114.72, "stop": 3119.06, "id": 675}, {"text": " coming and she couldn't make the trip.", "start": 3119.06, "stop": 3120.6, "id": 676}, {"text": " And so, reached out to you.", "start": 3120.6, "stop": 3124.34, "id": 677}, {"text": " Yeah, so she gave me the heads up on that.", "start": 3125.24, "stop": 3127.64, "id": 678}, {"text": " Then there was that those weeks when Mike you and I and other librarians at", "start": 3128.8, "stop": 3134.58, "id": 679}, {"text": " Wayne were considering.", "start": 3134.58, "stop": 3136.08, "id": 680}, {"text": " There was reluctance to give up the Michigan and Detroit collections because Mary", "start": 3136.7400000000002, "stop": 3141.98, "id": 681}, {"text": " Grove College, Wayne had a great as a great collection there are some", "start": 3141.98, "stop": 3145.46, "id": 682}, {"text": " duplications, but Mary Grove also had a very.", "start": 3145.46, "stop": 3149.46, "id": 683}, {"text": " Well developed Michigan and Detroit collection and we were reluctant to get that", "start": 3150.16, "stop": 3154.62, "id": 684}, {"text": " up in the beginning. So we are at we approached Wayne to consider housing those", "start": 3154.62, "stop": 3160.78, "id": 685}, {"text": " collections you can you talk a little bit about the discussion about that, Mike.", "start": 3160.78, "stop": 3166.92, "id": 686}, {"text": " Yeah, we get when we after our initial visit.", "start": 3168.62, "stop": 3172.02, "id": 687}, {"text": " And just, you gave me a tour I just realized just how much stuff you have, you", "start": 3173.42, "stop": 3179.22, "id": 688}, {"text": " know, it wasn't just the main library itself but it was the storage facility up", "start": 3179.22, "stop": 3184.42, "id": 689}, {"text": " down and you know below.", "start": 3184.42, "stop": 3186.14, "id": 690}, {"text": " And when you when you show me where the where the Detroit collection was like oh", "start": 3186.14, "stop": 3193.04, "id": 691}, {"text": " wow this would be great for to add to our collection because it was a there was", "start": 3193.04, "stop": 3198.1, "id": 692}, {"text": " some duplication but not a lot.", "start": 3198.1, "stop": 3200.26, "id": 693}, {"text": " And so it helped build it would have helped build a gap in our collection. And as", "start": 3200.26, "stop": 3207.24, "id": 694}, {"text": " I said, we definitely would have created sort of a sub special", "start": 3207.24, "stop": 3211.42, "id": 695}, {"text": " collection Mary Grove collection.", "start": 3211.42, "stop": 3213.16, "id": 696}, {"text": " So that's how the conversation went for a while. And then, as we started talking", "start": 3213.78, "stop": 3220.04, "id": 697}, {"text": " about logistics and, you know, we're moving into the", "start": 3220.04, "stop": 3222.68, "id": 698}, {"text": " holiday and, you know, it was.", "start": 3222.68, "stop": 3224.42, "id": 699}, {"text": " We just came to the conclusion that Wayne that it's just, it wasn't really a", "start": 3225.18, "stop": 3230.9, "id": 700}, {"text": " value add to the community for us to take the collection.", "start": 3230.9, "stop": 3234.2, "id": 701}, {"text": " It would not be more accessible at Wayne than it had been at Mary Grove, because", "start": 3234.2, "stop": 3240.78, "id": 702}, {"text": " these were academic libraries were not public libraries so There was that", "start": 3240.78, "stop": 3247.0, "id": 703}, {"text": " barrier to the public, the local community access to these collections so that's", "start": 3247.0, "stop": 3253.92, "id": 704}, {"text": " why it was a great solution to have the whole collection just", "start": 3253.92, "stop": 3258.4, "id": 705}, {"text": " digitized and put online.", "start": 3258.4, "stop": 3260.38, "id": 706}, {"text": " Yeah, and the, the Internet Archive came into this conversation and in very much", "start": 3261.7400000000002, "stop": 3266.46, "id": 707}, {"text": " the same sort of almost accidental ways and the in the conversations that that", "start": 3266.46, "stop": 3272.04, "id": 708}, {"text": " you and Mike were having and you know between Mary Grove and Wayne State, it just", "start": 3272.04, "stop": 3276.22, "id": 709}, {"text": " so happened that the Internet Archive was that we were in Michigan working on a", "start": 3276.22, "stop": 3280.96, "id": 710}, {"text": " project and had a friend, you know, like a friend of a friend who worked at Wayne", "start": 3280.96, "stop": 3285.74, "id": 711}, {"text": " State and heard about this collection as we were packing up another collection.", "start": 3285.74, "stop": 3289.9, "id": 712}, {"text": " And so it was like, well, hey, we're here, we might as well let's let's go across", "start": 3290.4, "stop": 3293.48, "id": 713}, {"text": " town and talk with the, with the folks at Mary Grove College and see what we", "start": 3293.48, "stop": 3297.44, "id": 714}, {"text": " might be able to do. And so I remember being involved in conversations with both", "start": 3297.44, "stop": 3301.66, "id": 715}, {"text": " Mary, you and Mike to talk about this like why should the disposition of the", "start": 3301.66, "stop": 3306.34, "id": 716}, {"text": " collections be and I was really happy to to hear you know there was a there was a", "start": 3306.34, "stop": 3311.8, "id": 717}, {"text": " moment in time in those conversations where it was like well the Detroit the", "start": 3311.8, "stop": 3315.58, "id": 718}, {"text": " local collections were going to go to Wayne State and you know from from my", "start": 3315.58, "stop": 3318.98, "id": 719}, {"text": " perspective as a librarian, that makes sense.", "start": 3318.98, "stop": 3321.22, "id": 720}, {"text": " I was, you know, let's keep local materials locally but then once, once Wayne", "start": 3321.22, "stop": 3325.98, "id": 721}, {"text": " State came back once Mike had a conversation and they said no we want the", "start": 3325.98, "stop": 3329.42, "id": 722}, {"text": " whole collection to stay together.", "start": 3329.42, "stop": 3331.1, "id": 723}, {"text": " That was even better like that's what we're trying to, you know, to get we want", "start": 3331.32, "stop": 3335.04, "id": 724}, {"text": " to keep those as Brewster was saying keep those those collections are more than", "start": 3335.04, "stop": 3338.78, "id": 725}, {"text": " the library is more than just the, you know, individual books, there's value in", "start": 3338.78, "stop": 3343.72, "id": 726}, {"text": " that entire collection that entire collection is cultural heritage so we were", "start": 3343.72, "stop": 3348.22, "id": 727}, {"text": " pleased to be able to say yeah if you know if Wayne State can't take all of the", "start": 3348.22, "stop": 3354.24, "id": 728}, {"text": " collection and 70,000 books is an awful lot to take on for a library.", "start": 3354.24, "stop": 3359.1, "id": 729}, {"text": " And if you, you know, if you're not going to take the local materials, we'll take", "start": 3359.68, "stop": 3364.34, "id": 730}, {"text": " it all. We'll take the entire library and we'll digitize it and we'll make it", "start": 3364.34, "stop": 3368.46, "id": 731}, {"text": " available so to marry to your point that, you know, by by donating the materials", "start": 3368.46, "stop": 3374.04, "id": 732}, {"text": " to the internet archive, so that we could digitize them, make them available and", "start": 3374.04, "stop": 3378.26, "id": 733}, {"text": " preserve the originals we now have access global access to these, these, you", "start": 3378.26, "stop": 3383.82, "id": 734}, {"text": " know, these resources that were previously, you know, just available", "start": 3383.82, "stop": 3387.34, "id": 735}, {"text": " to a to a local community.", "start": 3387.34, "stop": 3389.2, "id": 736}, {"text": " They're now still available to that local community but now they're", "start": 3389.2, "stop": 3392.36, "id": 737}, {"text": " available to the world as well.", "start": 3392.36, "stop": 3393.9, "id": 738}, {"text": " And I'd like to pick up a little bit on that of Brenda so you know now that", "start": 3393.9, "stop": 3398.8, "id": 739}, {"text": " now that all these materials are online.", "start": 3398.8, "stop": 3400.54, "id": 740}, {"text": " What does this mean for students who are currently studying social justice that", "start": 3401.46, "stop": 3405.9, "id": 741}, {"text": " this library has been digitized in its entirety and and made available.", "start": 3405.9, "stop": 3409.9, "id": 742}, {"text": " Well I think obviously access and, which is huge.", "start": 3410.5, "stop": 3414.78, "id": 743}, {"text": " But, you know, social justice materials.", "start": 3414.78, "stop": 3418.44, "id": 744}, {"text": " When you talk about nonfiction many people focus on those but there's also tons", "start": 3419.48, "stop": 3423.48, "id": 745}, {"text": " of fiction that help put yourself in the place of the other.", "start": 3423.48, "stop": 3427.86, "id": 746}, {"text": " And I think that that is a really strong piece that we all need a", "start": 3428.66, "stop": 3435.5, "id": 747}, {"text": " dose of, if you know what I'm saying.", "start": 3435.5, "stop": 3437.28, "id": 748}, {"text": " If we're going to try to get along more and push ourselves along towards a", "start": 3438.28, "stop": 3445.1, "id": 749}, {"text": " more just and peaceful society.", "start": 3445.1, "stop": 3447.56, "id": 750}, {"text": " When I think of understanding different cultures when you can't necessarily get", "start": 3447.56, "stop": 3452.98, "id": 751}, {"text": " there. And certainly with coven.", "start": 3452.98, "stop": 3455.46, "id": 752}, {"text": " Nobody's letting the United States people go out and about so on, you know,", "start": 3456.2200000000003, "stop": 3461.74, "id": 753}, {"text": " reading something like the God of small things which gives you the", "start": 3461.82, "stop": 3464.64, "id": 754}, {"text": " culture in India.", "start": 3464.64, "stop": 3466.14, "id": 755}, {"text": " And some of the struggles with that. I think not only adds to your knowledge base", "start": 3466.14, "stop": 3471.86, "id": 756}, {"text": " but it affirms your own feelings, perhaps of anger or depression", "start": 3471.86, "stop": 3478.62, "id": 757}, {"text": " or joy.", "start": 3478.62, "stop": 3480.18, "id": 758}, {"text": " And it gives you a wider view of the world. And we can see that not only some of", "start": 3481.2, "stop": 3487.78, "id": 759}, {"text": " the justice issues that we have here.", "start": 3487.78, "stop": 3490.04, "id": 760}, {"text": " There's also many. There's also many issues that are very similar going", "start": 3491.48, "stop": 3497.06, "id": 761}, {"text": " along around the world.", "start": 3497.06, "stop": 3498.66, "id": 762}, {"text": " And it can connect us to the fact that many people are working on", "start": 3499.5, "stop": 3505.02, "id": 763}, {"text": " bringing a more just world.", "start": 3505.02, "stop": 3507.12, "id": 764}, {"text": " You know, in the future, and that we are not alone.", "start": 3508.66, "stop": 3511.96, "id": 765}, {"text": " That that togetherness I think is going to be increasingly important as we are", "start": 3513.56, "stop": 3518.02, "id": 766}, {"text": " sitting here alone, you know, increasingly alone in our, you know, sort of", "start": 3518.02, "stop": 3522.48, "id": 767}, {"text": " temporary situation here.", "start": 3522.48, "stop": 3524.22, "id": 768}, {"text": " I'm curious now, Mike so you have access to these books and this collection", "start": 3525.46, "stop": 3531.2, "id": 769}, {"text": " without having to manage it. What does that mean for for you as a librarian.", "start": 3531.2, "stop": 3535.94, "id": 770}, {"text": " Well, I was looking at the question I was thinking about the,", "start": 3536.6400000000003, "stop": 3542.98, "id": 771}, {"text": " and I'm not, I'm not sure who coined it but the notion", "start": 3543.6, "stop": 3547.36, "id": 772}, {"text": " of a collective collection.", "start": 3547.36, "stop": 3549.14, "id": 773}, {"text": " That's how I think about is that, you know, it's, it's part of it really is part", "start": 3550.44, "stop": 3556.78, "id": 774}, {"text": " of our collection and and for our users.", "start": 3556.78, "stop": 3559.6, "id": 775}, {"text": " They essentially don't care where the where the material originates where you", "start": 3560.16, "stop": 3565.12, "id": 776}, {"text": " know whose server is sitting on or they just want to have access to it.", "start": 3565.12, "stop": 3569.6, "id": 777}, {"text": " And I think on one hand, from a librarian administrative standpoint and even from", "start": 3569.6, "stop": 3576.2, "id": 778}, {"text": " a budgetary standpoint, it's great that we have access to this material.", "start": 3576.2, "stop": 3580.56, "id": 779}, {"text": " Because it really does expand our collection exponentially in", "start": 3582.1, "stop": 3588.74, "id": 780}, {"text": " areas that we would not have traditionally collected in.", "start": 3588.74, "stop": 3592.76, "id": 781}, {"text": " And so it gives our users direct access to resources that they would have had to", "start": 3592.76, "stop": 3599.34, "id": 782}, {"text": " go somewhere else to get to.", "start": 3599.34, "stop": 3601.0, "id": 783}, {"text": " And for our users from their perspective, it really does channels channels of", "start": 3602.6, "stop": 3609.42, "id": 784}, {"text": " them where they don't have to go to Google or wiki or, you know, what they have", "start": 3609.42, "stop": 3613.3, "id": 785}, {"text": " access to reputable resources by reputable authors and reputable", "start": 3613.3, "stop": 3618.32, "id": 786}, {"text": " areas of study and in great scholarship. Okay, how about the long playing records. So I think Mary Grove can be an inspiring", "start": 4442.86, "stop": 4448.42, "id": 951}, {"text": " example, not just for all libraries that are in transition.
